Final Major Project - Contrasted Architecture

FMP - Contrasted Architecture

This font I also turned into a vector drawing.

Playing around with the settings created this, some letters were filled in with colour but as some were not whole shapes it made them much more abstract. These are something I could use as shapes and not letters.

These shapes could look nice next to the shapes from my previous font

Yet again illustrator helped me to neaten my work and turn it digital, so I could use it on possible future work.

As well as just making digital copies of the letters, I looked at the shapes they had been cut out from, which actually were interesting themselves, they could be even more interesting used on their own away from the letters, as shape is something I was looking at once in my project.

I wanted to create a layered look to the typeface, therefore added the solid shapes outline as well. This gave it an overall more 'busier' effect, which I really like, yet again the outline shapes could be useful to use separately from the lettering.

Colours are something I wanted to experiment with. The inspiration for these colours came from some buildings I photographed myself, in Sheffield, see below. I also wanted to experiment with putting the letters in to a word, therefore simply used the word architecture, however if I decide to somehow use this font within my project in the future I can experiment more with words and possibly sentences.

The turquoise/blue is such a lovely colour, and isn't something that is seen on many buildings, therefore I thought I would experiment using it myself. The coral/peachy/red colour on this other building is something I wanted to experiment with. Using these colours as a colour palette actually worked quite nicely.

Final Major Project - Contrasted Architecture

The next font I worked on digitally was the one which came from old fashioned railings.

From zooming in on my scanned in imagery, I drew around the whole line drawing, which then digitally created more shaped-like objects.

I experimented with different line effects and found one where some parts of the lines appeared thicker and some thinner, this works effectively as it refers more to the object I was working from.

This final experiment is more exaggerated from the last, both I like and both could be used interestingly.

The font below which I drew myself, I used on illustrator to make more accurate.

Because this font is made up with shapes such as squares and rectangles, all shapes with straight sides, it looks a lot more professional with the lines being 100% straight through illustrator vector drawings rather than my own free-hand lines. This could be developed even more, maybe with colour and having each shape to each letter a block colour rather than lines.

I filled each shape in with black, simply to see how the font would look as it was made up of solid shapes. I particularly like it this way as it makes it more vivid as it stands out, experimenting with colours rather than just black is something I will work on soon.

Adding colour was something I chose to experiment with. My inspiration for these colours came from the photographs below, which I found in an architecture book In full colour recent buildings and interiors. I decided to shade in some of the letters neatly, or quickly go over them etc, showing different ideas and development.

I could look at my own architecture photographs to get colour palette inspirations for further development in my project.

My next step was to move on to illustrator and work digitally with some of my drawings. I digitally drew vector drawings over my scanned in imagery/drawings. Some things I changed along the way. I particularly like how the lines and accuracy of the letters was neatened by this method.
I decided to change some of the letters as I found they didn't fit in with the rest of the letters, they looked slightly odd. As a whole, I am pleased with how this came out, I could experiment more with colour, possibly stitch, and putting the letters in to actual words.

Finishing the rest of the alphabet is something I could do in the future of my project whether I decide to use this or not.
