Final Major Project - Contrasted Architecture

FMP - Contrasted Architecture

Working from my previous drawings I moved on to work digitally on illustrator and create vector drawings. I find this method very useful as you can create a wide variety of shapes from drawings you have produced yourself.

Layering shapes/vector drawings is something I find useful.

Although this isn't a colour palette I particularly like, the shapes all mixed together work lovely as a composition. I like how the negative space contributes to the piece as an overall.

I like how the drawing still represents that the lines I originally drew weren't accurate, this works effectively and is different to creating quick straight lines.

Working from my own photography is something that is useful to use on illustrator as I can create drawings if I didn't create any at the time.

Firstly, I wanted to focus on the negative areas of the photograph, such as where the sky met the building and the shape it made. However, there was too much of the page taken up by the grey colour, therefore I added white shapes to represent the windows and smaller negative shapes. It is lovely to see the two next to each other.

Simple line drawings can work effectively. These shapes could be inspiration to develop, e.g. with printmaking.

With illustrator you can create simple shapes (below) or more detailed drawings with more lines (above). Yet again, I like to see the difference between both of the digital drawings.

This building was very complex and abstract in its structure therefore I thought it would look lovely as a vector drawing, which it turned out it did.

To begin i wanted to start of creatively and experimentally. I decided to make my own structure by leaning two wooden easils together (creating links to architecture/structure/shape) and drawing them in different medias and methods.

Because shape is a possible idea to include in my project, i decided to work away from detailed drawings and look for shapes only. I drew the outline of my structure and negative space too. This create some lovely shapes which i went on to use digitally.

Layering my drawings meant i had more shapes to work with as internal shapes were created. The blue outline on this drawing is very vivid, something i particularly like.

I like the idea of not including the outline of the structure and just drawing the negative shapes, although it makes it less obvious whas i was drawing, it still links to my project.

I experimented drawing with graphite but with it on its side instead. I found this looked like more of a background for the next drawing i applied on top, this is something i could use for future reference.

I continued drawing just the negative spaces as i found i had more shape varities from this, especially when moving the easils in to different positions.

Some of these drawings can be used on illustrator to create vector drawings/digital drawings.

I began my project by taking advantage of the trip to London. I knew this would be a great opportunity to see some brilliant architecture with it being such a big city. It was nice to see the contrasts of small querky building in places such as Camden Town and then larger more famous buildings such as the Westminister. Some of these photos will be useful to use on illustrator when creating vector drawings.

Materials:

(old and new)
  • Brick (industrial material)
  • Stone (found on cottage housing)
  • Wood
  • Recycled materials
  • Glass
  • Plastics

Contrasting shapes:
If i was to base my project around shapes of contrasting architecture it could fit in to all of my catergories as I could look at buildings, street furniture, (materials would fit in to these), Modern cities, small villages etc. It could be useful to pick certain shapes from certain buildings which contrast and see if the chosen shapes still contrast as it is only a certain part from something.
