Looking Up Looking Down

Project 6: Looking up looking down

I began to make maquettes of different book ideas by simply folding paper in different ways.

Cutting strips in to the maquette mant i could push these 'flaps' out to make pop ups.

It gives the book a real abstract look to it.

This idea is more simple however i decided to fold some of the corners in just to give it more of a shape.

Cutting out shapes in the pages meant that whatever was on the page behind it would be visible before turning on to that page. I really like this idea as it would make the reader want to look on the next page from being able to see a small part of it.

I experimented with triangular shapes. However it hought this could make a differece to my drawings as they have been done in my a4 sketcbook, meaning i would have to pick a certain section to be displayed.

Cutting a whole section out of the page instead of making a flap/pop up was something i wanted to try. It makes the book more querky.

This experiment is more interactive as there are flaps that have to be lifted to reveal what could possibly be underneath.

Having pop up pages within pages works interestingly and makes it easier to make the actual book instead of having to make enough pages with large paper. I could do this on both sides of the book.

I decided to make flap/pop-ups on the triangular book just to show more varieties.

Project 6: Looking up looking down

I  wanted to continue with drawing from observation so i had more of a choice of what drawings i could include within the final piece which was going to be a book of 8 drawings and 8 photographs.

Drawing from type is something i included as i find it something i am relatively good at and i just simply find interesting to work from.

I experimented with different types of drawings such as:
  • timed drawings
  • wrong handed drawings
  • blind drawings
  • mixed media drawings
  • drawing over materials
  • continuous line drawings
  • negative space drawings

Looking Up Looking Down

Project 6: Trace Elements

I drew from some of the objects in my photographs using a mixed range of materials such as graphite, fine liner and ink.

I also began to think of possible book ideas as this is something i should be thinking about throughout my project.

Looking Up Looking Down

Project 7: Looking up looking down

The Idioms project has been put on hold while we start our seventh project 'Looking up looking down'. I began by taking photographs by actually looking up and looking down at different things i could see.
The photos i have taken so far are of things that i think could create interesting shapes/imagery. I have also drawn some of the imagery in the photographs (from observation) before/after taking the photo itself.
