Final Major Project - Contrasted Architecture

FMP - Contrasted Architecture

Looking through my photography, I found that the window structure on one of the building looked like the letter 'F' (above left). I drew this myself and thought it could be interesting to draw the rest of the alphabet in this form, using similar shapes.

I also experimented with creating the lowercase letters in this method.

Working from this old fashioned gate was something I found lettering in to, however some of the letters I had to change a little and make them my own.

I used tracing paper to lay over my previous drawing (of building edges) and draw the letters I could see. I photocopied this drawing (left of the page) to cut out the letters.

I decided to stick the cut out shapes on to brown paper wrap, simply because the paper itself was white so it would blend in to the page and I liked the actual shapes as well as the letters therefore wanted them to be noticed too.

Using the drawing (above right) I looked for letters again to create another typeface. What I found interesting was that the two drawings (above) are both of contrasting architecture, the first modern buildings and the second old fashioned railing/gates etc, the drawings themselves contrast, and so do the fonts I made from them. The first font was made of straight lines and was very abstract whereas this one has curves to it, which I think quirks it up more.

Complimentary colours are another thing I looked in to as they sort of give off a contrasting effect, therefore I used these colours together for the lettering. Ink was something I wanted to try as it would simply thicken the lines of the letters, after doing this I prefer them when they aren't as thick and look more delicate.

I worked with using ink to represent the colour and the thickness of the gate I worked from. However, I prefer it when parts of the lines are thicker and some are thinner

Looking at one of my photographs from Matlock, I particularly liked the shape build within the wooden structure/framing of this building. I minimalized the shape to a sort of 'semi-circle/oval shape' and used this to repear to create my own letters (above right picture, right page). This was just a rough drawing and I knew it could be structured more accurately on illustrator.

As well as taking photographs on my journeys I drew from observation. I made my drawings very quick and simple, so I could get shapes which would help my ideas develop more.

Drawing from old fashioned railings was something I spent a lot of my time doing, as there are so many shapes that come from them.

I think these drawings both have lovely compositions, something I need to be considering throughout my project.

The contrast between my drawings shows a lot here where I drew a modern building in Sheffield, this compared to my drawings of railings is very contrasting.

These are yet again more drawings I admire for the composition. The shapes fit lovely together, they give off quite a delicate look, personally I think this is because the edges are all curved.

This final drawing is where my ideas began to change completely. Looking at the lines that cross with each other, I started to see lettering. I developed on to working with typography from here.

Final Major Project - Contrasted Architecture

FMP - Contrasted Architecture

I decided to take photographs so my own photography could possibly be used in my work. I also took my sketchbook with me to continue with my observational drawings (these will be shown in another post). All of these photos were taken in Sheffield, a city I considered taking a trip to when I written my statement of intent.

I like the negative space in the photo of the lamppost. If zoomed in on the lighting area it would have a lovely shape due to the different parts to it going round in a circular shape.
Glass is something that I found interesting to look at, especially in this second photograph as it is a photo of architecture and more architecture is shown through it.

This is where I considered looking at different materials, this refers back to my ideas mind map in the front of my sketchbook. The wooden architecture is interesting simply for how the wood has been placed out in panels.

These buildings made me begin to think about colour and colour palettes. These are the starting point for this so it would be interesting to study these colours and possibly begin to start my own colour combinations ready for my final outcome.

Initially I looked at these buildings for the shapes created with the negative space (where the building meets the sky, as the eye sees it). I then looked more in to the windows as they are separate shapes themselves. The simplicity of these shapes are just so beautiful from the way they have been structured within the architecture.

I really love the contrast from buildings such as the one above (left) and the opposite (right). The architecture on the right is obviously so much more old fashioned compared to the more contemporary. The thing I like the most is the outline of each building (where the building edge meets the sky) as the right image is much more detailed whereas the left image is simple yet very abstract.

These buildings can give me more inspiration for colour palettes.

I really enjoyed studying these types of architecture as so many shapes can come from them (especially the above right image). The shapes from them look very delicate whereas the shapes from the more modern buildings come across as being strong.

I also taken photographs in Matlock as this is a place that highly contrasts with Sheffield. It was nice to see smaller buildings and older fashioned architecture compared to the larger modern buildings.

Final Major Project - Contrasted Architecture

FMP - Contrasted Architecture

I continued to use the same drawings methods i had previously been experimenting with to develop my ideas. I found myself looking quite a lot at gate railings as there are so many varities of them. Working on collaged backgrounds contributed to my work.

Layering my drawings allows me to have more shapes to possibly choose from, shape is something that is occuring through my project and could be looked at more closely, for example, i may go down the route at looking at shapes from architecture, and seeing how one contrasts from another.

The left drawings (above) contrast from eachother, however i like each seperate drawing. I like the colour palette of the first one as i have used blues for the background (envelope paper) and the brown pen brings these colours out more. The opposite drawing is a less accurate drawing as i used my incorrect hand to draw with. I like how the collaged strips of paper contrast the the drawing of the railing as they go in opposite directions.

I purposely made the left (above) drawing contrast by using my prints of the old fashioned lampost and drawing more contemporary lamposts over the top. The first drawing is my preferred as i simply find the green pen more effective.

The opposite drawing on the right (above) were from looking at Chesterfield crooked spire, this is a great example of an old building where i also found interesting church windows. I really like the orange outline drawing of the church as it makes such a lovely shape. I also drew some stone and brick work which refers back to my ideas of materials.

I experimented with using the sewing machine and sewn into a photocopy of a print. By photocopying this once again after it flattened the image, something i found more effective than the real thing.

I didn't like the image once it had been converted to black and white as the sewn line is less obvious on the background.

Using a coloured thread to sew through a black and white image works effectively. The two images sort of contrast with eachother, something that could be useful to experiment with.
