Colour and shape

Project 4: Colour and Shape

I used the photographs i previously drawn from to use to create shapes ready for printing.

The negative space in my photos is something i thought could work nicely and create effective shapes.

Looking at windows was something i thought could work well as i could cut out both the building and the window so my shape had negative space inside of it.

Printing

I wanted to experiment with a range of materials withing my print-making. The first way of printing was to cut shapes out of different materials, ink them up with the ink and rollers and then roll them on to a surface. I used bubble wrap as i was sure the outcome would be effective for the obvious circular shapes. I then just simply used printing paper for my second image to print. Both of the images are stong in different ways as the printing paper didnt print in the ridges on the surface i printed on to, leaving a striped effect on it. I cut out some shapes from my architecture photographs and liked it as a third part to this piece just places over both prints.

Printing on to tissue paper had a delicate look to it and allowed some creases to show through which actually i thought looked quite interesting.

Sometimes i found that i hadn't rolled enough ink on to my paper shapes.

This is one of my favourite examples as both of the paper shapes had just enough ink rolled on them as a sharp outline was created. The white background really emphasizes the colours.

Another way of printing was to roll some printing ink out on to a flat metal sheet/plate and then lay our shapes on the plate and roll the surface over the top. I thought the shapes would be more obvious however i quite like the effect of the shapes looking 'blurred'.

I think these could be great to use as backgrounds or to add text over the top.

Colour and shape

Project 4: Colour and Shape

The second day of week 2 was to work with colour and shape again. I began by photocopying some of my previoius drawings from my sketchbook of architecture. I used these to create a series of shapes which i then went to overlay together on a double spread in my sketchbook

By enlarging the drawings from my sketchbook i had a clearer idea of what shapes i could use.

I had to think of/make my own colour palette for our final paintings. My ideas came from the architecture around college such as the bright green in the heart space.

I also liked the bright blue colour of thesee railings on a staircase. Once i had taken the photo i found that the shape of the railing itself was rather interesting. The yellow and brown in this photo are also colours i can consider.

My first painting consisted of shapes from the majority of my photocopies but only three colours, blue, green and yellow. However, i did leave some of the painting white as i found it made it more effective and gave a nice shape.

My second painting consisted of the same green, brown and red.

Colour and shape

Project 4: Colour and Shape

The second week of Graphic design was the begining of a week project about shape and colour. We had four main themes to choose from:
  • Natural forms
  • Man-made forms
  • Architecture
  • The human form
My chosen theme was architecture as i found i had more ideas on this area.

To begin this project i did some quick and simple continuousl ine drawings in my sketchbook. I did these from observation by looking inside the building i was in at stairways, ceilings and windows.

Overlapping my drawings gave me a wide variety of shapes which i could use further into the project.

This is my favourite drawing because the shapes are more simple yet they have lots of possibilities within them.

As well as working with shape, I also experiemented with colour. I worked with the primary colours, red, yellow and blue. However, i worked with six primary colours in total as there is the cool version to each colour and the warm one. These colours allowed me to create a variety of my own colours, inspired by colours i liked in magazines. At first it was quite difficult to get the colour as excact as possibly buy by the third colour it began to get much easier.

Graphical Observation

Project 3: Graphical Observation

Using our portait drawings from the previous lesson we began to work with wire which we folded into the shape of the drawing. I found that this really emphasized that the drawing was created with one continuous line as the wire is obviously a continuous material.

I really like how the wire looked once places on a white background away from the drawing. Although it didn't look like a realistic face it still has its main features such as eyes, nose and the mouth.

This piece i created quickly with my left over wire, it is all made of the same piece of wire. Although the face shape isn't there i still find it quite effective.

I created a shaddow of my wire pieces by shining a light over them. It created some really interesting lines on the paper behind the wire.

All of the pieces together made each piece compliment another.
